Understanding the Warrior Hockey Program
What is Warrior Hockey?
USA Hockey’s Warrior Hockey Discipline is dedicated to injured and disabled U.S. military veterans who have served our country and play the sport of ice hockey. As one of the Disabled Hockey Section's newest disciplines, Warrior Hockey is quickly growing across the country. While some of the participants played hockey prior to being injured, many try it for the first time for therapeutic reasons.
To be eligible to compete in the Warrior Hockey Discipline, participants must have a discharge under honorable conditions with the ability to provide official documentation from their designated branch of service. For full eligibility criteria, see the Warrior Hockey rules here.
Impact of Warrior Hockey on Veterans
The purpose of Warrior hockey is to provide a space for disabled veterans to heal through hockey. Warrior hockey has provided services and opportunities for over 500 veterans since it’s inception.
It provides a physical outlet for exercise, a team members can be a part of, and the opportunity for team competition. Most of all, it provides the closeness and camaraderie that our veterans often miss the most about serving.
Growth and Popularity of Warrior Hockey
Since it’s inception in 2018, Warrior hockey has grown from a handful of teams to over 20 team nationwide.
The 2024 Warrior National Championship was divided into 6 divisions by skill level. The Colorado Warriors narrowly won over the Flyers Warriors for the elite division championship. The Flyers Warriors send 4 teams to each national championship.
The Philadelphia Flyers Warriors: Champions at Heart
Team Composition and Leadership
Each team of the Flyers Warriors competes at a different tier within the national championships. Each team has a captain and two alternate captains. The overall program is led by the board of directors.
The program owes a debt of gratitude to our coaches, including Brad Marsh, Rob Baer, and Jeff Frankel. A recent addition to our coaching staff, Jeff has been focusing on skills and skating to make our program the absolute best it can be.
Training and Preparation for Nationals
The Flyers Warriors practice together every Sunday at the Pennsauken Skate Zone. Most of our players are on the ice in various leagues 1-2 more days per week.
In our latest tournament, the St. Louis Blues Warriors Gateway Classic, a hybrid team from Tiers 3 and 4 took the ice together and fought for the championship. They won two games and lost two games, coming in fourth in a field of eight.
“Ultimately, our guys played hard,” said Kevin Emore, assistant coach and Defenseman for the Tier 1 team. “We have some lessons learned and some key takeaways from this weekend, and we’ll take that back into training and preparing for nationals.”
Achievements and Milestones
The Flyers Warriors have competed in every major tournament hosted by USA Warrior Hockey since our inception in 2018. 2020 was a special year where all four tiers won their respective divisions.

Ways to Support Beyond the Rink
Sponsorship and Donations
As everyone knows, hockey is a very expensive sport. It is important that we can continue to afford all the costs associated with running a team of over 140 active and inactive players.
If you would like to support the team financially, please consider donating here. Every donation helps. We are a registered 501(c)(3), and your donations are tax deductible. You can also support the team by attending games or sharing our posts on social media.
Building a Community of Support
Off the ice, the Flyers Warriors are busy supporting our partners in the community. We work closely with Toyota on their Philabundance campaign, as well as the US Marine Corps Reserve toys for tots program.
